Though the celebration of
emancipation originated from the Caribbean in 1834, Ghana started celebrating
it since 1998, through the instrumentalities of former President Jerry John
Rawlings.
Its major objective is to reconnect
Diasporans to their motherland, thus uniting the black race.
Assin Praso is very dominant in the
emancipation celebration because of the fact that the town is the crossing point
on the Pra River from the Northern sector of the country to the South.
As remembrance of this, the
re-enactment of the crossing and other rituals are perfomed at Assin Praso.
The event brings back home family members,
friends and others who join the celebration for tourism reasons. It is
educative, entertaining and very informing as it depicts various dimensions of
our rich culture.
